My primary research interests are in the systematics, zoogeography, and evolution of the Sipuncula , a phylum of unsegmented marine worms. My early interest in the Pogonophora resulted in a few papers on this group. My collection of over 100 Pogonophora reprints is housed in the MCZ and a searchable listing can be reached via the collections page. My recent book, "The Sipuncula, their systematics, biology, and evolution" published by Cornell Univ. Press in 1994, encompasses most of my 30 years work. Recently I have begun to work with the Echiura, another group (phylum or family) or marine worms with a goal of trying to understand and clarify their systematics and phylogeny.

Because of a degenerative hereditary eye disease (Retinitis pigmentosa) I left my teaching duties at Utica College of Syracuse Univ. in 1989 and am on leave at the MCZ. I work out of my home office much of the time.
