Karel F. Liem has been at the MCZ since 1972 where he has been teaching
Ichthyology, Organismic and Evolutionary Biology, and Form Function and
Evolution. He has trained 12 PhD students and two Post Doctoral Fellows and
numerous undergraduates. He also serves on the editorial board of three journals
and has been the Albert Tester Lecturer at the University of Hawaii, the
H. Burr Steinbach Visiting Scholar at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute,
the Perry W. Gilbert Lecturer at Cornell University, and the Cocos Lecturer at Duke University. As a
Guggenheim Fellow he conducted research on the functional anatomy of cichlid fishes.
Liem's research deals with the functional aspects of fish development, the functional
morphology of the feeding apparatus of the Teleostei, and the ecomorphology of air breathing fishes.
