Tiago Simões, a researcher in the Stephanie Pierce lab and former Edward O. Wilson Biodiversity Postdoctoral Fellow, knew he found something special when he examined a fossil specimen collected decades ago. The fossil belongs to a previously unknown species of lizard-like reptile, representing the earliest evolving member of a lineage that today includes all lizards, snakes, and their closest relatives. The research was published in [Nature](https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-021-03834-3) and featured in the [Harvard Gazette](https://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2021/08/analysis-of-231-million-year-old-fossil-sheds-light-on-reptile-evolution/?utm_source=SilverpopMailing&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Daily%20Gazette%2020210902%20(1)).
