Prof. Pierce’s research is focused on major morphological and ecological transitions in vertebrate evolution through an examination of the fossil record. Her work tends toward 3-D modeling and experimentation of the musculoskeletal system, with particular attention to the link between form and function. Current projects include the fin-to-limb transition, the 'reptile'-to-mammal transition, and evolution of the horse.
