International Shipments to the MCZ

To meet federal regulations regarding importation and clearance of international shipments, as well as International Air Transport Association requirements for shipping research specimens, researchers sending material to the MCZ must:

  • Provide the name of the courier (e.g., FedEx, DHL, trackable post), the air waybill number, and an invoice of contents, including scientific names, countries of origin, and number of specimens of each, to the MCZ Curatorial Associate at least 72 hours in advance of any shipment. If your country requires any additional documentation, such as export permits, please provide these as well.
  • Include “USFWS CLEARANCE REQUIRED” on the international waybill AND in red on all sides of the outside of the package. (Note: “Scientific research specimens, not restricted, Special Provision A180 applies” should also be noted on the waybill and package if applicable.)
  • Documentation should include a Pro Forma invoice for customs purposes, which must include the HS code for every item, minimally the first six digits (9705.29.00; 9705.22 for protected species) and a declared value of no more than $1; contact the relevant MCZ department if a declared value of more than $1 is suggested.
  • Include three copies of all documentation (including additional documentation such as the original loan invoice or deed of transfer, collecting and/or export permits) in the waybill pouch.
